Top 50 Patriots Prospects: #19: Javon Baker, WR, UCF

Baker transferred to UCF from Alabama after the 2021 season. One of the most productive receivers in the country the past two years. Baker caught 108 passes for 1,935 yards and 12 touchdowns. Baker finished first team All Big-12 for his efforts.

Here is my scouting report on Javon Baker.

Javon Baker, WR, 6-1 202, UCF

Hands: Baker has strong hands. Does a good job of catching the ball away from his body. Has a wide catch radius but can also dig balls out at his feet.

Patterns: Quality route runner who is a long strider and eats up grass quickly. Drops his hips and fires into breaks quickly. Creates separation at the top of his routes. Gains route leverage on his releases and puts pressure on cornerbacks.

Receive Long and Short: Baker is a three level threat. He is effective underneath on perimeter screens and jet sweeps. He can run intermediate routes in the middle of the field and create separation. Baker can also make big plays, especially in plus territory.

Run After Catch: Has a second gear and can make big plays but needs to do a better job stacking defensive backs on fade and post routes. Tends to have choppy feet when he breaks and it slows him down.

Blocker: Competitive blocker who breaks down, punches and sustains his blocks. Physical. Baker is not afraid to mix it up.

Release: Uses a whole body release and creates separation. Baker also uses his hands well to get physical press corners off of him. Does have a tendency to get sidetracked when re-routed and needs to learn to get back on track.

React to Ball/Crowd: Physical. Not afraid to get into a crowd inside the numbers and compete for the ball. Uses his size and physicality to win in contested situations.

Initial Quicks: Good quickness on his release. Makes defenders miss. Doesn’t always separate however when he’s in route and he allows cornerbacks to maintain hip position on him.

Final Report: Baker has the tools to be a number one or two receiver. It will obviously depend on where he ends. He is a multi-skilled receiver who could be a difference maker at X or Z.

Draft Range: 2nd-3rd Round
