The Patriots take on the Broncos today with a shot to play in Super Bowl LX in two weeks in Santa Clara, California.
Today’s game is a heavy match up game and matchups will determine the outcome. If the Patriots want to win and advance, they will need to win all five of these matchups.
Here are the five matchups we are watching today.
Will Campbell vs. Nik Bonitto: Bonitto is a Defensive MVP candidate and spearheads a front that led the NFL in sacks. Will Campbell has not been good in these playoffs and this match up might be the worst possible one for him because Bonitto wins with speed to power. Campbell will need help at times and the times he doesn’t, he has to stay patient, be fundamentally sound and not rush his set. He can’t get caught out of position.
Milton Williams vs. Quinn Meinerz: Great matchup between two of the best players at their respective positions. Meinerz has the size and athleticism to matchup with Williams. The Patriots are going to have to move Williams around in terms of his alignment and move him laterally on stunts if they want to get him away from Meinerz.
Stefon Diggs vs. Patrick Surtain: I don’t foresee the Broncos fully committing to the matchup game with Surtain against Diggs. I think it will be on a down to down basis and situational. There will be times the Broncos may match up Surtain on Kayshon Boutte in the boundary. It will depend on whether or not defensive coordinator Vance Joseph believes that Riley Moss can match up on Boutte in certain situations.
Kayshon Boutte vs. Riley Moss: Soeaking of the Moss vs. Boutte matchup, these two will see a lot of each other today. This is a matchup the programs have an advantage in and should try to exploit as early and often as possible. Especially in plus territory. The Patriots need to take shots down the field. When they do, Boutte needs to be the main target and it needs to be against Moss.
Christian Gonzalez vs. Courtland Sutton: Big boy matchup here between the Broncos best receiver and one of the league’s top boundary cornerbacks. The Broncos will move Sutton around, including play him out of the slot. Gonzalez needs to match up and compete one on one, especially on slot fades, comeback routes, back shoulder fades and posts.
Bonus matchup: Patriots LB’s vs. Broncos RB’s: Denver is going to prioritize the run game today to protect Stidham. The Patriots front seven, specially their linebackers have to be in good position and finish plays at the point of contact. The Patriots have been the league’s best tackling team so that shouldn’t be an issue.
