On paper, the Falcons are one of the most talented teams in the NFL. They are not always consistent but they are a team that has it all on both sides of the ball. Size, speed and talent.
The Patriots will need to win one on one match ups in this game in order to win the game.
Here are five match ups to watch.
Bijan Robinson vs. Patriots front seven: Containing Robinson is job one. He is one of the best backs in the NFL and he can impact a game both as a runner and as a receiver. Robinson is explosive and once he is in the open field, he finishes runs. The Patriots are going to need to be sound with their run fits, pursuit angles and tackling. If they aren’t, Robinson could have a big day. Making early contact and wrapping up is key against him.
Patriots offensive line vs. Falcons front seven: Atlanta’s front seven is athletic and active. They get after the quarterback with base pressure and generating pressure. They lead the NFL in blitz percentage at 48.1. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will be aggressive in this game and get after Drake Maye. He won’t let him sit in the pocket and pick his defense apart.
Kyle Pitts vs. Craig Woodson: One of the more interesting match ups in this game. Pitts is a problem with his length and athleticism. If Woodson is matched up on him in coverage, he will have to be aggressive with him. Especially when playing the ball. As talented as Pitts is, he is not a physical player. Woodson should be able to match up against him.
Drake London vs. Christian Gonzalez: It appears London will play and if he does, the Patriots will match up Christian Gonzalez on him. This is a true X receiver, boundary corner match up. It will be one of the top match ups to watch in this game. London is a smooth route runner and he has strong hands. He is tough to defend in contested catch situations so Gonzalez will have his hands full with him.
Chris Lindstrom vs. Christian Barmore: Terrific battle inside of two players who are among the best at their respective positions. Lindstrom is a strong run blocker who gets movement in the run game and a terrific short area pass blocker who times his punch well and resets the line of scrimmage. We could also see a lot of Milton Williams and Lindstrom which will also be a good match up as well. That will be more of a speed on speed match up.
