The Roast of Tom Brady on Sunday was three hours of Brady’s former teammates, celebrities and Bill Belichick roasting the GOAT. It was the television event we knew we needed, but weren’t sure we were ever going to get.
To his his credit, Brady sat there and took barb after barb. From jokes about his marriage to his playing career, Brady got hit from all sides.
It was great to see former teammates like Drew Bledsoe whose starting job Brady took in 2001 come back and exact some revenge if you will on the all-time great. Bledsoe was terrific and despite what happened to him, he continues to be a class act and is a fixture when it comes to the team and attending special events.
Belichick was by far my favorite roaster of the night. He proved once again that he has what it takes to make it media if he chose to pursue that path. From his line about The Dynasty being a roast about him to his line about butting heads with Brady and Brady having his head up Alex Guerrero’s ass, Belichick was fantastic and showed yet again that that he has another side to him.
I thought Julian Edelman was good as well. He went after Belichick and mocked him for being unemployed which was funny. The Gronk penis joke and Aaron Hernandez jokes were pointless and tasteless however. I get it. It is a roast, but the vulgarity was over the top. It would have been just as funny without some of that stuff.
Brady himself did a good job of closing out the night. His jabs at Bills and Chiefs fans were good and his semi-acknowledgment that he may have deflated footballs left us wondering if he was admitting to doing it.
Finally, Robert Kraft asking for his “F’ing” ring back from Vladimir Putin was fantastic. I don’t think I have ever heard him swear before. The forced toast and embrace with him and Belichick however is a reminder that their relationship is still frosty.
Conversely, the Belichick, players toast seemed more genuine and I think all parties involved wanted to do it. You can see that despite how tough he was on his players, Belichick is still respected and appreciated by them.
In many ways, you can say the roast of Tom Brady closed the book on the dynasty. If not, his Patriots Hall of Fame induction certainly will.
It was nice to see Brady, some of his former teammates, Belichick and Kraft get together. Even if it was just for three hours. Relations might still be frosty between some of the parties involved but it was good to see everyone in the same room again nonetheless. Even if it is just for one night.
The roast helped Patriots fans gain se closure when it comes to the dynasty years. It was another reminder that the good ol days are over.
