Free agent cornerback Myles Bryant signed a one year deal with the Houston Texans on Monday. On the surface, some might think that Bryant’s departure is not a loss but in reality, it is.
Bryant played in 55 games, including 17 starts. He recorded 200 tackles, two sacks, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and four interceptions.
Bryant’s production and versatility will be hard to replace. The past three years, he has played in the slot, outside corner and even played some safety snaps in certain sub packages. Add to that his value as a return man and the Patriots have some big shoes to fill.
Cornerback Marcus Jones is returning from injury and is expected to fill the void Bryant is leaving behind. but Bryant’s leadership and willingness to do whatever it takes to win will be hard to replace.
Patriots fans might remember Bryant struggling at times on the outside but that is not his game. He is better suited to play inside and match up against slot receivers. If the Texans specifically play him inside, he will be good for them.
Bryant was an undrafted free agent out of Washington in 2020. He wasn’t supposed to make the team but he worked hard, carved a role for himself and ended up becoming a key contributor for Patriots.
You take players like Bryant for granted but the Patriots will feel his loss both on the field and in the locker room.
