The Patriots contingent of Eliot Wolf, Jerod Mayo, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, quarterbacks coach T.C McCartney and senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo all attended Daniels pro day on Wednesday. Daniels is in play at number three overall for the Patriots.
Daniels threw a 55 pass play script in front of a large gathering of scouts, general managers and head coaches. Here is what I saw from him.
Screens/Perimeter Throws: Smooth and fluid. Daniels gets the ball out quick and does not make his backs and receivers work for it. He has a nice, flat release and shows good touch, timing and anticipation.
Middle of the Field Throws: The strength of Daniels game. He threw the ball well on bang nine routes, digs and shallow crossers. He shows good timing and anticipation and leads his receivers into a spot. He also did a good job of changing his arm angle at times to add and subtract on his ball. Daniels displayed good touch, accuracy and ball placement on the post route. He timed his throws and footwork well.
Outside Throws: Daniels did a good job of dropping his arm angle and putting more zip on his out cuts and corner routes. Showed good touch and anticipation on his fade ball. He did miss some throws outside the hashes but overall I thought he consistently displayed the accuracy that is the hallmark of his game.
Pocket/Footwork: Daniels looked comfortable under center. He took snaps no problem, his fakes were clean and he did a good job of rising up in his posture, standing nice and tall and keeping his eyes down field to locate his receivers. His pocket awareness, movement and off-platform positions were good as well.
Presence/Demeanor: I liked what I saw. He has a good rapport with teammates, he’s comfortable being the leader and the quarterback. Daniels does not seem like he would get easily rattled.
Final Thoughts: I love Daniels physical tools. The more I watch him on tape, the more I see Deshaun Watson and C.J Stroud. The Lamar Jackson comp is silly. He is not the same caliber athlete Jackson was coming out of Louisville. He is a more polished passer. If the Patriots draft him, they should try to capitalize on his athleticism but it doesn’t have to be a big part of the offense. At 6-3 3/4 210 pounds, Daniels has terrific size and arm talent. He can make timing throws inside the pocket, which is important in the west coast offense. I would be more comfortable drafting him now than I was when I was watching his tape two days ago.
