The mystery of Matt Patricia is solved. He will be joining the Philadelphia Eagles staff as Senior Defensive Assistant

The mystery of what will happen to Matt Patricia has finally been solved, After months of speculation, Patricia is no longer with the Patriots. ESPN’s Tim McManus is reporting that Patricia is joining Nick Sirianni’s staff in Philadelphia as Senior Defensive Assistant.

Patricia has been in limbo for months after being removed as offensive play caller after a disastrous 8-9 season in which the Patriots had one of the worst offenses in the NFL.

When Bill O’Brien was hired as offensive coordinator in January, no one knew what was going to happen to Patricia.

After four months of uncertainty, Patricia has a new home and he returns to the defensive side of the ball where he will coach alongside new Eagles defensive coordinator Sean Desai who was formally the defensive coordinator in Chicago. Desai actually has Boston roots. He attended Boston University and coached the running backs and special teams under Frank Spaziani in 2012.

Patricia’s hiring ends one of the most controversial assistant coaching tenures in New England. Patricia had plenty of supporters in the building most notably Bill Belichick but he also had his fair share of detractors, particularly after he returned from his short lived and forgettable tenure as head coach of the Detroit Lions.

For Sirianni, this is a solid hire. Patricia bring a wealth of experience to the Eagles staff.

“Obviously his resume speaks for itself. It gives you a great mind in there that’s done it at the highest level,” Sirianni said. “It gives you great ability to bounce ideas off of with the defensive staff, and also gives me another former head coach that I can bounce ideas off of as well with things which I think would be very helpful.”

One potential sticking point to Patricia’s hiring could be his relationship with cornerback Darius Slay. Patricia and Slay had a falling out in Detroit after Patricia embarrassed him during a team meeting. The exchange led the Lions trading Slay to the Eagles. According to Sirianni, that has been addressed.

“Of course. Like you do with anything, you go through and talk to guys and make sure everyone is comfortable with it,” “I had conversations with Slay, I obviously had conversations with Coach Patricia, and I know it will be a good working relationship for us when that happens.”

It appears Patricia’s departure for Philadelphia will happen soon and with that will end his tumultuous tenure with the Patriots.
