The Chiefs win Super Bowl LVII and there are plenty of local connections who contributed to the win

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 last night in Super Bowl LVII. It was a thrilling game that came down to the wire with a hobbled Patrick Mahomes leading the Chiefs on one final drive that culminated with a 27 yard Harrison Butker field goal to win it.

With the win, the Chiefs have now won two Super Bowls in the last four years.

Several players and executives with New England ties will end up picking up a Super Bowl ring later this spring.

Leominister native Noah Gray, a former quarterback for the Blue Devils who was recruited as a tight end by Duke and ended up having a great career in Durham wins his first Super Bowl with the Chiefs.

Offensive tackle Lucas Niang, who was a star at New Canaan High School (CT) and later played at TCU also won his first ring with the Chiefs as well.

Former Everett High School star and Chiefs Assistant General Manager Mike Borgonzi won his second ring with the team. Borgonzi, who is in his 14th season with the organization is a Brown alum who was four-year starter as a fullback for the Bears, earning All-Ivy League honors three times. Chiefs President Mark Donovan is also a Brown alum. Donovan quarterbacked the Bears in 1987.

Vice President of Football Operations Chris Shea played at Belmont High School and was the Football Recruiting Assistant at Boston College from 1998 to 2000, the Assistant Offensive Line Coach at Harvard University from 1997 to 1998 and a Student Football Manager at Boston College from 1992-1996. I spent a lot of time at B.C in the late nineties and remember Chris well.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will pick up his second ring with the Chiefs and third overall. The Grafton High School graduate and Springfield College alum has coached under Andy Reid for 11 seasons. Spagnuolo of course was the architect of the game plan which shutdown the Patriots vaunted offense in Super Bowl XLII and ended New England’s hopes of an undefeated season.

Defensive line coach Joe Cullen is a Quincy native who played at UMass. Cullen also coached at UMass from 1990 to 1991. Cullen was a four year starter at nose tackle for the Minutemen. Former Patriots assistant and current Chiefs linebackers coach Brendan Daly will be picking up his 5th Super Bowl ring. Three with the Patriots and two with the Chiefs.

Speaking of the Patriots, former Patriots Joe Thuney and Danny Shelton are on the Chiefs roster and will pick up rings themselves.
