Talking ball with Avon Old Farms quarterback Matthew Baer

I got a chance to catch up with Avon Old farms Junior quarterback Matthew Baer. Baer is coming off of a monster game at BB&N where he accounted for 5 total touchdowns in a 48-14 win.

Baer and the Winged Beavers have a tough test this week against rival Choate Rosemary Hall. They will look to avenge back to back to losses to the Boars.

Here is my conversation with Matt.

NEFJ: You guys are off to a good start. What has been the key to your success thus far?

MB: “I’d say the key to success thus far has been driven off of the brotherhood and chemistry of our team. Everyone on all sides of the ball is playing great together. The defense is getting turnovers and stops and the offense is constantly making big plays. The scheme and play calling from the coaches has also been outstanding.”

NEFJ: How would you categorize your season thus far? Are you pleased with where you are?

MB: “Thus far, I’d say we’re playing solid football. There’s always going to be things to correct and work on, but overall the team is playing great together. Offense is averaging around 40 points a game and the defense has been balling out also. I’d say that we’re happy with where we’re at but we’re never comfortable. We’re always looking at improving.”

NEFJ: You have a big game this week against Choate. What is the mindset of the team heading into the game?

MB: “The mindset this week is to stay disciplined throughout every practice and the game. Every week we are continually resetting the standard here at Avon. Whether it’s making sure everyone is at class on time or making sure nobody jumps on sides the ball. We also need to prepare like it’s our last game. We’re playing a good team, so preparation and trust within ourselves is very important this week.”

NEFJ: You are one of the top dual threat quarterbacks in New England. Why have you been able to develop and take the next step?

MB: “My support system, team, and coaches have helped elevate me to play at a high level. I’ve been grinding all offseason by training and building chemistry with the new team to be able to play the best I can in season. I’m truly blessed to have my mom, Godfather and football/speed trainers supporting me at home while having great teammates and coaches as well.”

NEFJ: What does Avon Old Farms need to do the rest of this season to reach its goals and have this be a successful season?

MB: “Every week the mentality is 0-0. We move on from all of our previous games the minute we finish the film. No matter what the outcome is, we need to attack and plan every game week by week with the same mentality.”
