Doyle Delano is one of the best players in Massachusetts. Yet if you live South of Boston, you may not have heard of him. It is because Delano won’t flood your X timeline with hype videos and his highlight film. He is all business.

The senior defensive end/linebacker is one of the top returning defensive players in the state and he is looking forward to this season after an off-season of getting ready for it.

“I’m excited, more than ready to show off the work that not just I have done in the offseason, but also my teammates. We have a strong and experienced returning squad and we are prepared to face any challenge head on.”

The 6-foot-2, 213 pound Delano leads a talented Big Blue team that figures to be a contender in the Northeastern South and in Division 5. Delano will play a big role in what coach Peter Bush does defensively. He wants to play to his team’s strengths, specifically Delano who is an athletic, fast player off the edge.

“For those who may not know me: I’m an extremely aggressive player, if theres an opportunity to be physical, I take it, no question. I also pride myself in finishing every rep and playing to the whistle. I think it sets a good example to my teammates, especially younger ones, that you can’t teach effort.”

In an era of student athletes leaving for Catholic Schools and private schools, Delano decided to stay at Swampscott and be a part of maintaining the Big Blue tradition. He says there are two reasons why he opted to stay.

“Two words immediately come to mind, “Pride” and “Brotherhood”. If you ask anyone who has played a Swampscott sport one thing they will mention without question is pride. For me, being able to be on varsity and carry on the winning tradition of Swampscott and represent the team in the highest regard is something I’ve looked forward to for years. This team is also a family, we’ve known each other for years and are around each other everyday, we trust one another to carry out our responsibilities.”

Delano says his coaches also played a big part in him deciding to stay at Swampscott High School.

“Another important aspect in my decision to stay is our coaches, they all lived and breathed playing Swampscott football and the culture that comes with it. I knew in my choice that they would push me everyday to constantly be my best.”

As for team and personal goals, Delano says there is one goal he puts above all else. It is not what you think it would be.

“Obviously everyone’s goal is to go undefeated and win the Super Bowl, but I would say the thing most important to me this season is Thanksgiving Day. We haven’t beaten our rival Marblehead on Thanksgiving since 2012, having to see the seniors faces each and every loss has left a special feeling in me and definitely my teammates. I’m confident that this year with the squad we have been building that it’ll be our turn.”

With Doyle Delano leading the way, anything is possible for the Big Blue this season.
