Could this be a memorable year for Jim Mora’s UConn Huskies?
Well, now sitting at 3-2 after beating FAU and Buffalo by a combined score of 95-17, it certainly seems to be trending that way.
UConn is still in the midst of a wild six-game stretch of all home games and a mediocre Temple team is next to visit The Rent this Saturday at 3:30. Two years after going 6-6 to become bowl eligible in Mora’s first season, the Huskies have a legitimate shot to exceed that mark this season if they can continue to take care of business.
During his weekly Tuesday press conference after practice, Mora talked about what’s led to this point. As usual, he quickly threw some water on all the hot takes popping up locally and nationally when it comes to his Huskies.
“We’ll certainly have our work cut out for us,” he said regarding Temple. “We practiced well today. That’s what we have to continue to do. I’ve said that some of the success we’ve had – and I think it’s pretty limited success quite frankly – has been rooted in the work we’ve been doing and the attitude we have and the attention to detail and creating the right mindset.
“We just have to stay on that path. (Temple) is going to be a great challenge. I’m excited about it and I think our players are excited about it.”
Mora also added that there is still so much more this UConn team is capable of.
“I don’t think we’ve (played to our potential). I don’t think we’ve come close yet,” he added when asked about the offense. “I think…statisically it looks pretty good, but when you break it down and you look at the finer points and the details, we’re not close to where we need to be yet to be more consistent. I think there’s some lulls in our intensity. We’re up and down too much. So, it’s a constant quest to get better every week, every practice and every play of every practice. That’s what we’re trying to focus on.
“But, I didn’t have expectations numbers wise. My expectations never change and that’s ‘hey, max out every day.”
Coming from an NFL background, Mora has done a good job of not hearing anything – good or bad – when it comes to his team in the media. But, it’s hard to ignore the positive buzz around the Huskies right now whether it’s on campus or outside of it.
He’s doing his best though and trying to have the team do the same.
“I don’t really pay attention to it, so I can’t really comment on it,” he said. “It doesn’t matter to us. The only way you…in athletics, it’s critical you don’t listen to the noise because when you’re doing well everyone tells you how great you are. When you’re doing lousy everyone tells you how sh*tty – how cruddy or crappy – you are and neither one of those things are true. The only thing that matters is when we get in a room as a team are those people in that room.
“That’s what our focus is. Noise is just noise. We all know that at this point in this world, unfortunately, in the social media world they just want to build you up so they can just cut you back down. So, we don’t pay attention to the noise.”
