Sleepers by the dozen for 2024

As we are deep in the spring, we never stop looking forward to the fall.

We wanted to peek ahead to the MIAA season, but with a bit of a different twist.

These are teams that we feel are a little bit under the radar at this point. Maybe we did not go for them this past season, but we feel can make an impact this year. If you were ranked at all last season, you don’t really qualify for this list.

Here are some teams, in alphabetical order, that make this sleeper list.

And, of course, some teams could be added over the course of the offseason.

Let’s get to it.

Apponequet — This is a traditional power on the South Coast that had a bit of a down year in 2023 with a 5-6 record. But this program won’t stay down for long. Running back Brody Joly can put up big numbers, and will be tough to stop.

Bay Path — Maybe this team should have been more on the radar last season, as the Minutemen went 10-3. There is a chance for even bigger things in 2024, as running back Kaiden Brochu put up monster numbers as a junior.

Braintree — This program keeps taking steps forward in the Bay State Conference. The Wamps closed last season with a win over Milton on Thanksgiving. Running back James Curry is a big back who can run, and is poised for big things.

Clinton — If you’re looking for maybe the next CMass small school breakout, you can stop here. This team, in D7, beat Rockland decisively in the playoffs last year. There were a lot of juniors on that team, so keep an eye out for the Gaels.

Dennis-Yarmouth — Continue to sleep on this Cape Cod program at your own peril. This is a team that always seems to throw the ball effectively. Look for that to continue, as quarterback Jayden Barber is one of the top returning signal callers in the state.

Doherty — There are plenty of talented players in the city of Worcester, and the last couple seasons, Worcester South has been the top city public there. But don’t forget about the Hilltoppers, and quarterback Josh Romeo, who is very talented.

Norwell — Again, probably a team whose bandwagon we should have been on a year ago. That said, keep an eye on the Clippers. William Bostrom is one of the top running backs on the South Shore and beyond. This is a D6 state title contender all day.

Old Rochester — The South Coast could be where it is at this season. Whether it’s Fairhaven, Dartmouth, Apponequet, or this program, all could do playoff damage. Old Rochester was very young last fall, and is always in the mix.

Wayland — This is a team that improved steadily over the course of last season. It has been a while since Wayland has made a big splash in the playoffs. But we are big believers in running back Max Dresens, and this team’s chances in 2024.

West Springfield — This is one of the top programs in Western Mass. The Terriers can always throw the ball, and have one of the top receivers in the area in Johnny Gingerhua. This team played North Attleboro tough in the D3 playoffs last fall.

Westford Academy — The Grey Ghosts have been slowly building their program over the years behind coach Bruce Rich. Alex Wilson is more than just a talented safety, as he will likely play quarterback this year, as well.

Winthrop — This is a program that has scored some big wins over the years, and this year should be strong again. Running back Nicholas Cappuccio is a terrific talent who will build on his significant career numbers this season.
