Sights and sounds from Patriots training camp – Day 9

The Pats were back at it inside Gillette Stadium on Friday night for the annual season ticket holder and Foxborough resident practice.

-Corliss Waitman and Chad Ryland were first out at 6 PM, along with Bryce Baringer

-Fans began streaming in at 6:04 as kids rushed to the first few rows behind the benches to try and get a great view and maybe some autographs following the two-ish hour session.

-Ryland and Nick Folk kicked field goals on each end. Once again, Ryland’s clear near the top of the uprights, while Folk’s are about midway up the net, if that. This should be Ryland’s job.

-Kyle Dugger, Jabrill Peppers, Marcus Jones, Myles Bryant, Demario Douglas and Tre Nixon were all fielding punts as more guys made their way out of the tunnel about 43 minutes from the start of practice.

-During some light positional warmups Mac and DeVante dapped it up and danced a bit, he’s obviously having more fun so far this season.

-DL and OL made their way out of the tunnel to a nice ovation before stretching started.

-New video board was officially turned on today and in-use during the evening. What a game changer it’ll be from a game day experience standpoint, the thing is absolutely incredible.

-After his odd departure and then arrival back at Thursday’s practice, Jack Jones was on the field Friday night.

-About 6:50 the OL and DL worked on some light run game stuff at walk through speed with a couple passes thrown in with Zappe leading one group on one end and Mac on the other.

-Bill Belichick and Devin McCourty chatted at midfield during this light portion prior to the “real” practice starting. McCourty was also on the big video board with Mike “Sarge” Reilly hyping up the crowd as they entered.

-The announcement of Matt Judon’s new restructured deal also broke right around this time (6:55) as the “blue team” and “white team” went to separate sidelines. Judon did not practice. The “blue team” kicked off with Ryland handling those duties for his squad. Dugger received the opening kick. As part of the special teams period to start, Folk then kicked off for the “white team” and Demario Douglas. This alternated for a bit as Mac and Mcsorely chatted on the blue sideline while Zappe, Baringer and Joe Cardona chatted on the white sideline. Kayshon Boutte also received a kick, but it was mostly Douglas and Dugger.

-Mac opened 7-on-7 in the red zone (walkthrough speed) with a short hitch to JuJu Smith-Schuster. Followed that up with a dump to Pierre Strong and another short Hitch to JuJu with Gonzalez on his back. Had it been full speed it probably would’ve been an easy PBU. A swing pass to JJ Taylor and a nice grab by Tre Nixon in the back of the end zone followed. Gesicki grabbed a quick out for a TD and then Raleigh Webb on a slant ended Mac’s reps in this session. Zappe went dump to Stevenson, slant to Stevenson, out to Stevenson, short to Bourne and short to Kevin Harris before McSorely came in.

-Mac and Bill O’Brien talked for a bit near midfield during McSorely’s 3-4 reps.

-Back to a bit of kickoff work with Folk and Ryland both alternating kicking to Isaiah Bolden. Waitman kicked off (for the first time I believe) to Strong.

-First bit of 11-on-11 (walkthrough speed) went to Zappe. Mostly just handoffs to Stevenson with a nice long ball to Thornton mixed in that drew a good-sized cheer for the thousands on hand. Once getting down to the 10-yard line, Zappe went short to Henry, handoff to Stevenson then had a pass broken up in the back of the end zone by Marcus Jones. Nick Folk capped the “drive” with a 38-yard field goal before the team re-set field position following another kick off by Waitman. Jones’ drive went play action short to Tre Nixon, handoff to Strong, handoff to Strong, deep to JuJu, incomplete to Gesicki (drop), handoff to Strong, completion to Pitts. The drive was then cut short for a 45-yard Ryland attempt that went wide right, but the leg was more than enough,

-Found it interesting Zappe worked with the one offense and two defense, while Mac worked with the two offense and one defense. Belichick was also in the huddle for each play call.

-Another 11-on-11 drive for Zappe: Handoff Harris, swing pass to Harris, swing pass to Harris. Baringer then came on and punted a ball to the moon (ok, 60 yards) with ridiculous hang time that was fielded by Marcus Jones.

-Mac was back out for a drive starting at his own five yard line: Handoff to JJ Taylor, play action deep to Parker against Gonzalez (great ball, but remember, half speed), crosser to Nixon, incomplete out to Parker (out of bounds), quick pass to Taylor, would-be sack for Uche (“complete” over the middle to Nixon), handoff Taylor, Mapu PBU back of end zone (terrible throw from Mac), handoff Taylor, incomplete back left corner of the EZ to Nixon (overthrow), PBU Gonzalez on crosser for Webb. Ryland bounced back with a 42-yard field goal that would’ve been good from at least 50.

-Zappe back out for another 11-on-11 drive: Short to Henry, handoff Stevenson, crosser for Boutte over the middle. Baringer punt. There also appeared to be a wedding in one of the club section, what a wild idea, but pretty sick if you can afford it.

-Mac’s back out: Outside handoff to Strong, play action dump to Strong, dump to Strong. Waitman punt to Douglas.

-Zappe back out on the plus-25: incomplete out to Sokol, short over the middle to Firkser, quick out to Sokol, incomplete back left corner of end zone (intended for Sokol), quick out to Sokol, TD back of end zone on slant to Malik Cunningham, quick out to Harris for TD. Folk from 41 (struggled to get there).

-Mac’s turn again starting at the plus-45: swing pass to Taylor, handoff Taylor, quick pass to Taylor, Mac scramble, Mac scramble. Delay of game, BB throws his hat at Mac from behind. Gesicki flat for TD, DaMarcus Mitchell would-be sack but Mac finds Parker in the back left corner of the end zone while rolling out, good throw. Ryland good from 43.

-Zappe back out at midfield with the one’s: Dump off Stevenson, incomplete deep Parker, Shaun Wade PBU on sideline (should have been picked. Mac in the same sequence: quick out to Parker, Parker incomplete sideline but great effort/grab almost dragging two feet, Gesicki dump off, would-be sack for Uche. Brutal snap on a 48-yard Ryland FG attempt and he hit a low missed that went under the bar.

-Halftime at 8:01. Staff gathers at midfield to chat. Ryland and Folk kicked field goals on each end during this to give the fans some entertainment. Really impressive crowd as well, just about the entire lower bowl was full.

-The North Attleboro youth team made its way onto the new video board, kids were fired up.

-More punts (alternating between Baringer and Waitman) to open the second “half” with Douglas, Marcus Jones, Jabrill Peppers and Myles Bryant receiving.

-Towards the end of the night Boutte hauled in a dime for a “TD” from McSorely. Both Bolden and Marte Mapu added INT’s to cap the evening.

-While Jack Jones and David Andrews spoke to the media on the Patriots sideline near the 20 following the conclusion of practice, players signed autographs for fans and gave some kids some memories that’ll last a life time.

While this was basically an all walkthrough speed type of night, there’s definitely reason to be optimistic about this 2023 team. The Pats are off Sunday before practicing Sunday, Monday and Tuesday next week. All three days will be 1 PM practices and the final ones open to the public. The first preseason game and only home game before the season opener is Thursday the 10th against Houston.
