The Patriots dropped their preseason finale to the New York Giants, 42-10 in an ugly loss.
Here are seven points from the Patriots loss.
1. 35 regulars don’t play: 35 players who would be starters or key depth players did not play. It was expected. The third preseason game is meaningless. It is about evaluating depth. Last night was telling when it comes to the Patriots depth.
2. Handful of vets play: Jabrill Peppers, Keion White, Cole Strange and Kyle Dugger were among the veterans who played in this game. Dugger once again played until the end of the game. The Patriots have some tough decisions to make with Dugger and Strange. Both could be cut next week potentially.
3. Depth players struggle: Lack of depth is a problem across all levels of football and the Patriots clearly lack the type of depth you need to win Super Bowls in the NFL. It was evident last night as the twos, threes and fours struggled in a blow loss to a Giants team that is better but not great.
4. Defense was awful: Mike Vrabel and defensive coordinator Terrell Williams will have plenty to critique. The effort was bad, the tackling was bad and the pursuit angles were poor. It was an all around bad night for a Patriots defense that 1 v. 1 should be pretty good.
5. Wooldridge was mid: Rookie quarterback Ben Wooldridge played the entire and while he had his moments, he was mediocre for the most part. The Patriots quarterback depth has been iffy so far this summer and Wooldridge did nothing to alleviate the team’s concerns regarding their depth at quarterback.
6. Kicker conundrum: Andy Borregales made a kick and missed a kick. Parker Romo did not kick at all. Mike Vrabel said after the game that they are still evaluating both kickers but as of now, it looks like a tough call. Neither kicker has been exceptional to say the least. I am leaning towards. He has been more consistent.
7. Vrabel hates rats: A report that wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk was going to miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury surfaced on Thursday. Vrabel addressed the report after the game and he did not seem happy about the information getting out.
“I’d like to find out where some of these [reports] come from. Some of these rats around here. We’ll figure that out.”
A stern warning from a coach who takes what he does seriously and doesn’t miss around.
