Sean Marinan returns to Xavier High School as head coach

A familiar face is back on the sidelines at Xavier (Conn) High School. Sean Marinan is back as head football coach, replacing Andy Guyton who stepped away from the program last month.

Marinan won five CIAC championships (2005, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014) from 2002-16. His record as the Falcons head coach was 120-44-1.

In a statement released by the school, Marinan is happy to be back and he is looking forward to winning some football games.

“I am very happy to back at Xavier and working with the Xavier community in furthering the school’s mission,” Marinan said in the release. “Hopefully we will win a few football games as well.”

Marinan spent the past seven seasons as an assistant coach at Southern Connecticut State University. He replaces his former defensive coordinator in Guyton. Guyton took over Marinan and has coached the team the past eight seasons.

Xavier President Nick Ceretta said in a statement that he holds Marinan in high regard and is excited to have him back at the school.

“Sean Marinan is more than just a football coach. He is a leader, a teacher, and someone who embodies the values of Xavier High School,” Cerreta added: “His passion for developing young men of character has always been evident, and we are thrilled to welcome him back home. His return is not just a win for our football program but for the entire Xavier family.”

Xavier won 31 in a row under Marinan and won a state record three-straight Class LL championships, beating Trumbull in 2010, Staples in 2011 and Norwich Free Academy in 2012.

Marinan is a graduate of Xavier so he returns to his alma mater once again.
