Opening Thought: The Boston College Eagles open the 2018 season at home against an improved UMass team that destroyed Duquesne last week 63-15. This will be the second meeting in the last four years between the two schools. B.C beat UMass two years ago at Gillette Stadium.
Here are three keys to the game for the Eagles.
1. Set The Tone Early Up Front On Offense: The Eagles need to come out and set the tone early by running the football. They need to lean on UMass and use their size advantage.
2. Account for Isabella: UMass receiver Andy Isabella is a big play target who can be a problem in space, especially after the catch. The Eagles have to account for him on every snap and not lose him underneath. If they do, Isabella could hurt them.
3. Get Pressure On Ford and Comis: Zach Allen and company need to get constant pressure on Andrew Ford and Ross Comis. UMass’ passing game is good. The Eagles cannot allow either quarterback to get comfortable and in rhythm.
Final Thought: It’s all about getting off to a good start. The best way for the Eagles to do that is by running the football and setting a physical tone. If they do, they should be fine against the smaller Minutemen. The one thing Boston College doesn’t want to do is to allow this to become a track meet. UMass can score and a shootout would allow them to hang around in this game.
