Boston College has a good ol quarterback competition on its hands in fall camp. The battle is between redshirt junior Darius Wade and redshirt freshmen Anthony Brown.
Both have competed and played well in camp thus far, making their fair share of highlight plays in the passing game. Wade has the experience edge between the two quarterbacks having played in 12 games in his three years at the Heights.
While Wade might hold the experience edge, Brown is younger and a better fit for the Eagles offense moving forward.
Here are three reasons why Anthony Brown should be the Boston College quarterback.
1. Brown is Younger: Age matters at the quarterback position now more than ever. We are seeing it all over college football. If you can find a quarterback that is good enough to start within two years of being in your program, start him.
Brown is entering his second year in the system. He has obviously developed and is ready to play. The physical tools are there and it is obvious that he is gaining confidence. Steve Addazio should start Brown and put the quarterback position on lock down for the three years.
2. Fits the Scheme Better: The Eagles want to be more of a spread, no huddle team that can still pound the football but play with more pace and push the ball vertically down the field.
Brown is the better deep ball passer of the two quarterbacks as evidence by his connections down the field with fellow redshirt freshmen Kobay White.
The Eagles have some speed on the outside and if they want to take advantage of it, they should start Brown.
3. Brown is a Dual Threat: Brown may not be as adept at running the football as Wade but he is still a dual threat who can impact the game as a runner as well.
The Eagles return one of the best offensive lines in the ACC. They not only can protect Brown as a passer but they can create running lanes for him in the running game.
I would not fault Addazio if he started Wade. There is a comfort level there. However if Addazio takes a long term view of things, he would see that it would make more sense to start Wade.
