SCITUATE – The early favorite for game of the year took place on the South Shore Friday night.

Scituate junior quarterback Jonny Donovan connected with Roman Glowac for a five yard gain which appeared to be the final play of regulation. After a brief meeting, the officials determined Scituate called timeout with one second left in the game.

Then, Donovan dropped back, uncorked a deep ball and against all odds, senior captain Lawson Foley came down with it in the end zone as time expired to give Scituate a 21-14 walk-off win to open the season.

“We were just hoping to try and make a couple first downs over the middle and take a shot at the end zone,” said Scituate head coach Herb Devine. “Glowac, Lawson Foley, Joey Burke go down deep and Jonny makes a good throw and we make a catch. We got lucky. Let’s be honest.”

On the prior possession, Foxboro was threatening to win the game. Senior quarterback Mike Marcucella connected with Ryan Foley on a 26 yard pass to set the Warriors up on Scituate’s side of the 50.

The Sailors defense tightened up and forced a turnover on downs.

“Give Foxboro credit. They made a good drive on us there but our kids stepped up on third and fourth down,” said Devine.

Scituate missed a go-ahead 28 yard field goal with just over three minutes left in the game three plays before Marcucella connected with Foley.

Donovan and Foley (three catches, 110 yards, two touchdowns) connected on an earlier 61 yard touchdown pass too. Foley reeled in a contested catch and outran the Foxboro defense to the endzone to tie the game at 14 in the third quarter.

Two plays before the Donovan to Foley strike, Marcucella threw a 44 yard touchdown pass to Cam DeLeskey to give Foxboro its only lead of the game, 14-8. DeLeskey found some space, caught the ball, then made a man miss in the open field.

Scituate had a huge goal line stand as time expired in the first half to preserve an 8-6 lead.

“That stop at the end of the half was huge. We went into the locker room up 8-6,” said Devine.

Jon Sacchetti – filling in for injured star running back Ben Angelini – scored the first touchdown of the season for the Warriors on a physical three yard run.

Donovan opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 12 yard rush. Willy Robinson plowed through on the two-point attempt to give the Sailors an early 8-0 edge.

Foley had an interception and a sack for Foxborough. DeLeskey also intercepted a Donovan pass.

“[Donovan] made some mistakes, but he also made some good plays. And he’ll learn from it” said Devine.

Foxborough (0-1) turns its focus to a home game against Walpole. Scituate (1-0) will travel to Whitman-Hanson next week.
