Robinson brings toughness and experience to the Patriots

The Patriots drafted Texas A&M guard Layden Robinson with Pick 110 in the fourth round of the NFL Draft.

Robinson was a three year starter with the Aggies, starting 33 games and playing in 45 games total. Robinson is listed by the Patriots at 6-4 315 but when you watch Robinson on film, he doesn’t look that big.

Regardless of his size, Robinson is an experienced, smart and tough player who will give the Patriots another guard that can enter their rotation and compete for a starting job.

Robinson met with the media after he was picked and he described himself as a grinder and called his playing style “tough.”

“The biggest part of my game is I’m a grinder. It’s been instilled in me for years, for a long time, especially with my coaching staff at Texas A&M. Just be a grinder, just go in there and be tough, be gritty and go after people over and over again. That’s my play style, you know? Growing up, I always looked up to Larry Allen. I love the way that he played the game. Some great offensive linemen like Quenton Nelson, Chris Lindstrom, guys like that. You see their film; they’re popping off the tape with their effort and straight end finishes, and that’s how I kind of model my game.”

Last season, Robinson played at the same level  as some of the guys he idolized. He only gave up one sack in 401 snaps. That is a pretty impressive stat.

Given that the Patriots took three interior offensive lineman in last year’s draft, it was a surprise that they drafted Robinson. Clearly they saw enough in him that they took him.

Robinson is looking forward to playing for the Patriots. He was impressed with his visit when he met with the team.

“Well, the impression of the Patriots, just a championship program. Just going there and when I visited – because it was one of my 30 visits – I mean, it was a great feeling. I loved the coaches. Just going around the facility and seeing all the previous players, all the accolades and just the tradition of the Super Bowl championships that they had in there. That’s a winning program, and we’re doing everything that we can to try to get this back on the road to becoming a Super Bowl-contending team again.”

Now Robinson has an opportunity to help the Patriots return to glory.
