If you read our Recruiting Roundup a week ago on Xaverian, you saw that quarterback Henry Hasselbeck was prominently featured.
One of the top quarterback recruits in New England, Hasselbeck has a great mix of FCS and FBS programs that have offered him to this point.
Hasselbeck has many great qualities as a prospect, but one that jumps out is his ability to run and make plays with his feet.
More and more, we are seeing that college recruiters value a quarterback with mobility. Maybe that is just the state of the game, but a player who is not able to move around and avoid the rush is not getting as much attention from colleges now.
But those dual-threat quarterbacks seem to be in demand when we talk to coaches on who they like and what they see.
Interior presence
Right now, you are seeing interior offensive linemen really stepping forward as some of the top prospects in the state.
Three players to really watch are class of 2024 Brian Brennan of BB&N, class of 2024 Brandon Sullivan of Catholic Memorial, and class of 2025 Thomas Brown of Chelmsford.
Brennan has a handful of offers, and recently picked up one from Harvard. Sullivan has Harvard and just grabbed another from Bryant.
Brown is still in the beginning stages, which is to be expected of a younger player, but is seeing plenty of FBS interest. A national champion wrestler, Brown has outstanding film and is just scratching the surface of his ability.
Devil of a time
Leominster is a team that lost a lot to graduation and transfer, but should still be in the conversation among best teams in Central Mass. and beyond this fall.
The Blue Devils lost nine of 11 offensive starters, plus wide receiver Kaiden Drinkwater to Tabor, and 10 of 11 defensive starters.
Still, there is plenty returning too. Quarterback Osiris Lopez, RB/LB Xavier Cora, RB/DB Braden Martin, OL/DL Tony Kendall, and a good group of up and coming underclassmen have coach Devin Gates excited.
Lopez is only going to be a sophomore and will be one of the top signal callers in the state.
The Blue Devils have some intriguing nonleague games with St. John’s (Shrewsbury), North Attleboro, Westford Academy, and Peabody.
Big moves in Boxer-land
With the hiring of Jermaine Wiggins as the new coach of Brockton High, there is plenty of excitement in the City of Champions. The next move for the former Patriots Super Bowl champ is to put together a staff.
Since Wiggins does not work in Brockton, it would be smart if he could find someone who is in the building to be a prominent assistant. That would help ease the transition.
The recruitment of top Boxer wideout Cameron Monteiro is going to be an interesting one to watch. Monteiro has offers from SEC schools, and also one from Boston College.
The local team has a real shot, but right now things are pretty open. We don’t foresee this coming to a close anytime soon, but anything could happen.
Baker the touchdown maker
Wachusett tight end Grayson Baker has picked up a huge offer when Holy Cross jumped on board this week.
Baker is a terrific prospect. What we like most about him is how quickly he transitions from receiver to runner after catching the ball. He gets upfield fast and is a YAC machine.
We’ll see who else jumps on board for Baker, but he will have good options.
