After a 3-8 season last year, Reading is off to a 4-0 start this fall.
The Rockets claimed a 28-6 win over Woburn this weekend, and face Arlington next.
We spoke to Reading coach John Fiore to get a sense of how the Rockets have performed.
Here is an edited version of that conversation.
Adam Kurkjian: Last year was a tough year, obviously, 3-8. What does it mean to your team to get out to this start?
JF: The kids feel very positive about themselves. Just have to embrace the one game at a time, one play at a time mentality, which they’ve been good at. They’re just trying to work as hard as they can every single practice. That’s really where we’re at.
AK: Who are some of the kids that have played really well for you so far?
JF: Up front, James Donahue, Jeremiah Sanford, Reily Learned, Ben Diemer, Jacob Whitmer, and Ben Peterson are all coming on strong. We’re happy with them. I think, generally speaking, the team has taken it each day, trying to get better. It’s been a very collective, hard-working effort. We’ve got our hands full this Thursday, with a really good Arlington team. We’re just going to turn the page real quick on Woburn, and move forward.
AK: It seems like your best teams over the years have had really good line play. You mentioned some linemen. Has that been a good unit for you this year?
JF: They’ve been vastly improved over last year. We’ve played some teams that are very good up front. We’re going to play another one on Thursday night that’s excellent up front with probably one of the top linemen in New England in Brady Bekkenhuis. All the guys that line up around him are excellent, as well. We’re just going to push ahead to try and get to that challenge.
AK: Was there any point this year in those first four games where you thought, ‘OK, we have something again here’?
JF: Honestly, I’m more happy with how we practice every day, how that’s been going. We’re fortunate. We’re happy with the desired results so far on the win and loss, but far happier, and we as a team are trying to take more pride in what we do every day at practice. Try to hammer that message home, and take in those micro little moments of football each day at practice.
AK: Is this a fun team to coach?
JF: Very much. Very fun team to coach. Love coaching this team. Our staff is having a blast with these kids because they’ve embraced competition. They’ve embraced practice. Whatever happens at the end of a game, happens. But as long as we control our focus and work ethic and intensity at practice, we’ll always be able to look at ourselves in the mirror coming off the field, no matter what the scoreboard says. But we are having a blast with this group.
