Pirates Preview: Massachusetts Pirates (4-0) at Quad City Steamwheelers (1-2)

The Pirates kick off a three-game road trip tonight against the Quad City Steamwheelers at the Vibrant Arena at the MARK in Moline, Illinois. The Pirates are coming off of a 54-29 victory against the Iowa Barnstormers.

Quad City enters the game with a win against Sioux Falls to open the season but they have lost their last two games against Green Bay and Frisco.

The last time these two teams met, the Pirates prevailed in a 63-49 shootout win.

Here are three keys to the game for the Pirates.

1. Get early stops: Quad City’s offense has big play capability. The Pirates have to get some early stops and let the offense do it’s thing. They cannot fall behind early.

2. Keep pounding with Robinson and Thomas: Massachusetts has a dynamic one,two punch at running back with Tavion Thomas and Jimmie Robinson. Keep pounding the rock with those two guys. It sets up the passing game well.

3. Move Owens around: The Pirates could generate match ups with Thomas Owens against any team especially one that struggles to defend the pass like Quad City does. Look for Thomas to have a big night in this favorable match up.

Final Thoughts: Pirates should improve to 5-0 in this one. Only way it doesn’t happen is if they get off to a slow start defensively. Then, they could have a battle on their hands.
