Patriots veterans who could be released or traded before the season

After 14 training camp practices, a lot has transpired in terms of players stock rising and failing. Several veteran players in particular are on the bubble and could be traded or released before the start of the season.

Here are some of the Patriots veterans being mentioned as potential cut or trade candidates:

Kyle Dugger (S): Despite being a team captain and signing a significant contract last offseason, Dugger’s role seems to be in question. He has been getting fewer first-team reps in the last few practices in favor of Jaylinn Hawkins and rookie Craig Woodson. A trade is possible and it could save the Patriots some cap space moving forward. The Patriots would have to eat some money in a scenario like that, something they do not like to do.

Jahlani Tavai (LB): Tavai’s size and playing style may not fit the lighter, faster linebacker mold that Vrabel and defensive coordinator Terrell Williams are looking for at linebacker. He has been mentioned as a potential cut candidate, especially with other linebackers like Christian Ellis and Jack Gibbens making an impression in training camp.

Marte Mapu (LB/S): After moving from safety to linebacker this offseason, Mapu has not yet shown enough in camp to secure a roster spot, making him a potential cut candidate. He has a diverse skill set but he will need a strong finish to training camp to make the team.

Kendrick Bourne (WR): Bourne is considered a logical trade candidate rather than an outright cut as the Patriots’ wide receiver room gets more crowded with young players. He has not shown enough this camp thanks to injuries and a lack of reps. The emergence of young receiver like Efton Chism III means that Bourne could be on the outside, looking in. He should have suitors if the Patriots opt to make him available.

Rhamondre Stevenson (RB): Going into the summer, I thought that Stevenson might be a potential trade candidate but Vrabel’s commitment to a physical running game requires multiple backs. Stevenson has had a good camp and barring a change in thought process, I do not see the Patriots releasing or trading him. You can never say never though.

Mike Onwenu (G): After a huge contract extension last off-season and a down year in 2024, Onwenu was on the bubble coming into training camp. He has had a strong summer however and is likely staying. That and his large dead cap hit makes a pre-season release or trade unlikely.

Anfernee Jennings (EDGE): Jennings has been a reliable player for the Patriots the past three seasons but it is abundantly obvious thus far in training camp that he is not a fit in the Patriots attacking, one gap defensive scheme. He could be traded or outright released.
