Three months after signing running back James Robinson in free agency, the Patriots announced on Monday that they have released the veteran running back.
Robinson signed a two year deal worth up to $8 million dollars in March. The veteran running back went through OTA’s and seemed to be on track to be a change of pace back up to Rhamondre Stevenson.
According to Mike Reiss, Robinson’s contract included injury waivers and split salaries if he landed on injured reserve. Yesterday was the first day of mandatory mini-camp. Players typically take physicals on the first day so Robinson’s release could be injury related.
The move frees up a roster spot and it gives both veteran Ty Montgomery and second year running back Pierre Strong a better shot at making the team now and contributing.
The Patriots also released defensive back Tae Hayes as well. They did sign defensive tackle Justus Tavai but will still have another roster spot. With DeAndre Hopkins expected in town this week, it could be his spot if he and the team come to terms
