Patriots Journal – Minicamp (2nd edition)

Day two of Patriots mandatory minicamp is in the books. Here’s what we saw over the course of the two-hour session. One more left on Wednesday before the team heads home.

-Julian Edelman was in the house.

-Season ticket holders got to view practice and grab a few autographs, as well as meet Pat Patriot and some of the cheerleaders. Cool training camp-like atmosphere.

-The team ran some conditioning drills to open the session, something we hadn’t seen them do yet. There were two separate stations that both offensive and defensive guys went through, usually it’s right into position drills, but not today.

-As far as key absences, still no Guy, Thornton or JuJu. Not ideal.

-Once “real” football activities got going, Mike Gesicki leapt up and grabbed a ball from Mac over Josh Bledsoe.

-Minutes later, Mac hit Hunter Henry in the corner of the end zone on a good ball and then he hit DeVante Parker int he back left corner as he jumped up to pluck it over Jonathan Jones.

-Jack Jones picked off Mac on a ball thrown to the sideline during the same 7-0n-7 work.

-Arguably Mac’s best ball of OTA’s or minicamp came towards the end of the period as he dropped a deep ball in a bucket to Gesicki over Adrian Phillips. Absolute dime.

-Bailey Zappe closed out the first bit of 7-on-7 with a short throw to Malik Cunningham, a ball behind Cunningham and an incomplete pass out of bounds over the head of Scotty Washington.

-Punt period was up next ad Corliss Waltman continues to hit high rotating bombs with that left foot. For what it’s worth, he’s been “first” ahead of Bryce Baringer and in my opinion he has a clearly bigger leg.

-First bit of 11-on-11 followed starting at 12:07. All runs early between Stevenson and Montgomery at about half speed. When Mac and Zappe did throw in this period, it was all short and screens, as has been the case most of this month.

-At 12:20, the team took like five minutes to run a drill where the QB’s threw short passes, pass catchers then turned upfield through coaches with pads and met defenders 1-on-1 for some “open field” looks.

-Punting again at this point briefly, QB’s and TE’s went to work on a separate field s we’ve seen regularly.

-Quick 7-on-7 period again at 12:30. Trace McSorley got most of the looks here, completing short passes to Kevin Harris, Pierre Strong and Cunningham. Josh Bledsoe had a PBU on the left sideline and Ed Lee closed the period out with a nice grab.

-Kickoff work followed with Nick Folk and Chad Ryland alternating. Lee and Isaiah Bolden received.

-The most intriguing part of the day started at 12:37 when the Pats went to 11-on-11. Mac started the period, but it was Zappe getting double the reps, including with the “ones” during his second go-around.

-Mac started out with a broken play, then had to hold a ball for a would be “sack” when coverage was  tight. Parker jumped and caught a nice ball, Christian Barmore knocked a ball out of the air at the line the ended up back in Mac’s hand. Bledsoe had a PBU on the sideline against Anthony Firkser. Peppers also had a PBU against Hunter Henry.

-When Zappe took over he had completions to Firkser, Strong and Montgomery. He also had two passes broken up by Christian Gonzalez and Bledsoe. No. 4 also had a nice scramble too. The team re-set field position and Zappe was back out.

-This time, Zappe hit Gesicki, Harris, Stevenson and Gesicki on the drive. DB’s rotated between Gonzalez, Jack Jones and Jonathan Jones. Mac stood completely by himself about 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage just watching, not talking to anyone during this point. These obviously aren’t the most competitive reps so it’s hard to make any judgements, but this was the first time we really saw Zappe work with the top guys – at least the ones that are in attendance.

-McSorley went through his drive before Mac had one more opportunity with 11-on-11’s, but threw to Matt Sokol, JJ Taylor, Cunningham and Ed Lee. He also got Jennings to jump offside.

-There was some more “walkthrough” 11-on-11 for about 10 minutes after that.

-At one point, Jennings and Chasen Hines chirped each other and held blocks a bit longer until Matt Judon stepped in to push Hines away.

-Around 1:00 the team wrapped things up with some field goal work and two minute drill. Mac moved the ball downfield quickly with throws to Parker, but he was soon picked by Marcus Jones. Mac got the ball back and hit Henry on an out then Parker for a TD.

I’d be surprised if the Patriots canceled the final minicamp practice on Wednesday after losing two OTA’s for the violation by Joe Judge, but there’s a chance it happens. Still tough to gauge much of the offense, but the defense is still ahead of them as it stands right now, which is normal for a team implementing a new offense with a new OC.
