FOXBOROUGH – Tuesday was the first day in pads for the Pats, what did we learn? That and everything else I noticed from Day 6 of camp…
-For the first time, it was not Adrian Colbert taking the field first on Tuesday but Jalen Mills alongside coaches Jerrod Mayo and Steve Belichick
-Robert Kraft arrived via helicopter prior to the start of practice.
-You knew it was “real” football today when the NFL officials made their way through the little AEW-like entranceway the players and coaches come out of.
-The crowd was back today which was nice to see, although the energy still wasn’t great.
-Bill Belichick gathered the team for a quick meeting prior to the start of the stretching period, something we hadn’t seen him do to this point.
-Early on during position group work, Jake Dolegala tossed a deep ball to Isaiah Zuber who made a great catch adjusting his body, Zuber’s made a few impressive catches over the last couple days of camp.
-During one of the initial competitive periods, Mac was picked off by Myles Bryant on a throw over the middle. It wasn’t his last pick of the day either.
-He did bounce back on the very next throw, dropping a dime into the bread basket of Tre Nixon but it was dropped. The day clearly went to Cam, but Mac did have some good looking throws at times, the roller coaster continues.
-I said it before camp started and I still believe it, Gunner is going to eventually be a factor on offense. He’s quick out of breaks and I’m not sure I’ve seen him drop more than 1 or 2 balls in practice.
-During some punt work Cody Davis flew around and would’ve had a block had it been truly live.
-During one-on-one sessions, Josh Uche and Christian Barmore were beasts, particularly Uche. Barmore ended up getting hurt towards the end of practice (foot) and watched the final few team periods from the sideline.
-About an hour into practice Ja’Whuan Bentley picked off Mac on a similar looking play to the Bryant one during 7’s.
-N’Keal Harry continues to show flashes. He made two fantastic catches on Tuesday, including one in the back corner of the end zone that drew a huge roar from the crowd.
-During some of the first 11’s work, Sony Michel hit the hole hard and sprinted upfield, David Andrews could be heard yelling “that’s a good start, let’s go!”. Damien Harris, Rhamondre Stevenson and Michel have all ran extremely hard and hit the holes with emphasis every day in camp.
-The day was really for the offensive line and the running game, with a heavy dose of smash mouth to get the motors going.
-There were a few times where JC Jackson and Matt Judon could have murdered whatever running back had the ball at the time but held up. Both of them were quick getting to edges on Tuesday.
-JJ Taylor reminds me of David Meggett when he’s returning punts. Ideally, he’s a much better human than Meggett was, but he, Gunner and Marvin Hall all look like they could be factors.
-Hall had a ridiculous juke during one punt return drill to make an initial guy miss.
-Raekwon McMillian was injured at one point and left the field towards the end of practice.
-During one oft he later team periods Cam had arguably his best throw of camp, hitting Agholor on. Deep ball with Kyle Dugger on him.
-Bolden and Cam took turns trying to get the crowd fired up when the defense had to run a lap following a goal line period.
-While Nick Folk and Quinn Nordin booted field goals, Matt Slater’s kids were all over the catching duties, helping out Joe Cardona.
-Following a touchdown run on an option, Cam hit Hunter Henry on a perfectly thrown wheel-route in the back of the end zone drawing a big cheer.
-Flipping the field and working on coming out of their own end zone, Mac had a great throw to Jonnu Smith over the middle, getting it out quick.
-During the same period, Cam hit tight end Troy Fumagalli on a similar throw over the middle. Cam also had a great back-corner end zone throw to Kristian Wilkerson to close out two-minute walk through.
-On one field coach Belichick oversaw some field goal block work. Josh Uche, Mills and Rashod Berry all got pieces of balls, but they weren’t kicked by any kickers but rather a coach.
-Devin McCourty has been breaking down the defense prior to leaving the field. It’s been a “D, D, D, defense” chant followed by a “dominate on three…1, 2, 3 dominate!”
-Tedy Bruschi was on hand again and appeared to be going over some technique work with rookie Ronnie Perkins after practice.
