Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing serious legal trouble following allegations of a violent encounter earlier this month. According to reports, Diggs has been charged with felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery. The charges stem from an alleged incident that took place on December 2, just one day after the Patriots’ dominant victory over the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
During a motion hearing held on Tuesday morning, Diggs’ defense attorney, Michael R. DiStefano, appeared remotely to request that police reports and related case documents be impounded. DiStefano argued that the release of these records would create a substantial risk of prejudice against his client due to the intense media scrutiny surrounding the star athlete. Notably, the defense also informed the court that they are currently engaged in discussions to reach a financial resolution with the alleged victim, stating that both parties are working toward an agreement.
The judge has taken the request to seal the records under advisement and is expected to issue a ruling shortly. As it stands, Diggs is scheduled for arraignment on January 23, 2026. This timing is particularly sensitive for the organization, as the court date falls just two days before the scheduled AFC Championship Game, should the Patriots advance that far in the postseason.
The Patriots addressed the situation on Tuesday with an official statement acknowledging the gravity of the accusations while standing by their leading receiver. The team confirmed that Diggs categorically denies the allegations and stated that they will continue to gather information while cooperating with the NFL and local authorities. For now, the team appears to be maintaining its support for the 32-year-old veteran as the legal process unfolds.
On the field, the loss of Diggs would be a significant blow to the Patriots’ championship aspirations. He has been a focal point of the offense this season, recording 82 receptions for 970 yards and four touchdowns. With the team currently sitting at 13-3 and having secured the AFC East title, any potential placement on the Commissioner’s Exempt List could shift the landscape of the upcoming playoffs.
These legal challenges come during what has been a monumental year for Diggs personally. In November, Diggs and his partner, recording artist Cardi B, welcomed a baby boy. While the star receiver has been a positive influence in the locker room and a “security blanket” for rookie quarterback Drake Maye, these serious allegations now cast a shadow over both his season and his personal life as he prepares for a potential legal battle.
