Patriots sign URI wide receiver Ed Lee to a contract

The Patriots had two roster spots left and they are filling one of them by signing URI wide receiver Ed Lee. Lee got a tryout with the team last month and apparently has made the most of it. ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported Monday morning that the Patriots have agreed to terms with Lee.

Lee came out of nowhere last season to become the Rams leading receiver. He caught 56 passes for 908 yards and five touchdowns. In 37 career games for URI, Lee caught 86 passes for 1262 yards and eight touchdowns.

At 5-10 185, Lee offers alignment versatility. He can play in the slot or outside. He is a terrific route runner with plus hands and a wide catch radius for his size. He also returns kicks and was one of the best punt returners in the nation last season at the FBS level.

Lee earned second-team All-CAA Football honors as a wide receiver and third-team as a punt returner. He lead the CAA with 908 receiving yards, averaging 16.2 yards per catch. Lee also averaged 11.3 yards per punt return.

The Washington D.C native grew up a Patriots fan so this is an opportunity of a lifetime for him. After having the opportunity to cover Ed last season and cover his pro-day, I cannot say enough good things about him from a media standpoint. He is a class act and deserves this amazing opportunity. We wish him nothing but the best.

Here is my Feel The Draft interview with Ed from earlier this spring prior to the draft.
