NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Patriots have signed free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott to a one year deal that could be worth up to $6 million dollars.
According to Rapoport, the Patriots were impressed with Elliott’s workout recently. After evaluating internal candidates the last three weeks, the Patriots decided to sign the veteran today.
Elliott was drafted fourth overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. He rushed for 876 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. In his career, Elliott has rushed for 8,262 yards and 68 touchdowns. He has caught 305 passes for 2,336 yards and 12 touchdown receptions in his career.
Elliott recently turned 28 and while he is not necessarily past his prime, he lis not the player he once was. Despite that, he is still a good second back who complements Rhamondre Stevenson well especially on second and third and long as a pass blocker and receiver.
Elliott is clearly an upgrade over what the Patriots currently have behind Stevenson at running back. He is the second running back they have signed in three days. On Saturday they signed USFL veteran C.J Marable.
Elliott should be meeting the team in Green Bay tomorrow and could be available as early as Saturday night. He will wear number 15 like he did at Ohio State.
