Sights and Sounds from Patriots Practice- Preseason Week 2

The Patriots practiced one final time before heading off to Green Bay for joint practices and preseason game number two on Saturday night at Lambeau.

The Patriots were in full pads and the tempo was good especially during individual and group periods.

After having Friday and Saturday off and going just helmets yesterday, the team looked fresh.

Here are some observations I made from today’s practice.

– Mike Gesicki got hurt today. He went down awkwardly attempting to make a move. At first it looked like it might have been a knee injury but it turns out it was his shoulder as he landed awkwardly. It didn’t look good but we don’t want to speculate. He left practice and did not return.

-Bill Belichick said in his pre-practice media scrum that guard Michael Onwenu is considered day to day. That is a good sign. It means Onwenu could be back for the season opener against the Eagles.

-Mac Jones got the majority of the reps at quarterback today. With the joint practices against the Packers this week and Saturday night’s game, it is a safe bet Jones will get most of the reps this week as he prepares for his first game action of the season.

– Cole Strange was dressed to practice but didn’t participate. He was an observer for the day.

– The receivers had a good day at the office. The entire group looked good. They looked so good in fact that Tyquan Thornton caught his first pass of the summer from Mac Jones. That little tidbit is courtesy of Zack Cox of NESN.

– Malik Cunningham got reps at quarterback, wide receiver and gunner on special teams. That’s right. GUNNER! He’s willing to do anything asked of him and by the looks of things, the Patriots are asking to do a lot as they try to keep him on the roster.

– Trent Brown looked pretty good today at left tackle. He was moving well in the run game and in pass protection. It is too early to tell if he is all the way back but he is close. He was moving more fluidly.

– The mixing and matching continues along the offensive line. Perhaps the most notable thing is Riley Reiff at guard. Given his age and experience, sliding inside to guard at this stage of his career makes a lot of sense.

– The secondary has also been an area where the Patriots have mixed and matched personnel in an effort to find the right combinations in certain packages.

– Speaking of the secondary. Shaun Wade had a good day in coverage. He picked off an errant throw from Zappe on a screen play.

– Chad Ryland handled all the placekicking duties. By my count, he connected on five field goal attempts. Nick Folk did not attempt a field goal in the day.

– It was the annual rookie lineman fielding punts practice. Atonio Mafi and Keion White fielded their punts to save the day after a rough start.
