Patriots: Sights, sounds & thoughts from Day 12 of training camp

With Carolina set to visit Tuesday and Wednesday for joint practices before a preseason game Friday night, the Pats weren’t in pads on Monday, but still got some things accomplished.

Jumping right into the next installment of sights, sounds and thoughts…

-I believe Brendan Schooler was first out today, not Terrance Mitchell. However, Coach Belichick and the assistant coaches were talking as players made their way out, so there’s a chance I missed him.

-Guys absent from practice on Monday: Malcolm Butler, Cody Davis, Joejuan Williams, Bill Murray, Justin Herron and Isaiah Wynn. Williams and Butler are interesting considering they’re currently fringe roster guys.

-At 10:18 the first bit of 11-on-11 started with a nice cut from Damien Harris to hit a hole and burst through the line of scrimmage. Mac followed that up with a nice play action ball over the middle to Nelson Agholor.

-While up against Justin Bethel, Kristian Wilkerson followed up his big game against the Giants with an impressive catch down the right sideline.

-Myles Bryant came up with a pick of Mac early on.

-Early on, Bill Belichick was swearing up a storm, first cussing out the chain gain, then a bit later he was chewing out guys for misalignment. It was arguably the most vocal we’ve heard Belichick all camp so far.

-The first of a few big plays on the day was an Agholor jump ball grab against Jonathan Jones up the left sideline that included a nice toe-tap to stay in bounds.

-There was no contact and nothing was truly full speed, but it felt like the offensive line communication was better and the overall operation was smoother for the offense. Still not perfect by any means, but lots of time still.

-Towards the end of the first of several 11-on-11 periods, both Jack Jones and Mitchell had nice PBU’s, with Mitchell diving to make a pretty play on his

-A few minutes of kick off work began at 10:55 with Ty Montgomery back receiving kicks.

-At 11:02 it was back to 11-on-11 and Mac immediately hit Meyers with a nice throw over the middle.

-At this time, both Tristan Vizcaino and Nick Folk were back to hitting bombs in the media tent. WEEI’s Kahri Thompson had two sick catches while basically lying on his back.

-Jonnu Smith had a nice short TD catch when he sat down in a crease near the goal line and Mac hit him with a low bullet.

-Another highlight reel catch for Agholor on a fade against Jonathan Jones in the back left corner of the end zone and Bailey Zappe closed out this portion of red zone work with a nice ball to Nixon in the same back left corner.

-11:15 was more kick off work for a few with JJ Taylor, Rhamondre Stevenson and Marcus Jones receiving. Jones was drafted largely for his return ability, so hopefully we get to see it this week or next against Vegas.

-Final bit of 11-on-11 started at 11:30 with an emphasis on two-minute. Last season it felt like two-minute work was done a ton, this year not so much. Mac had a throw away early and Hunter Henry false started for a lap a snap later.

-Following miscommunication with what looked like Agholor, Mac yelled “do your job!” His final rep in the two-minute portion of practice was a pick in the end zone from Jabrill Peppers when a ball thrown behind Henry was tipped.

-Hoyer would have had a great long ball TD during his reps in two-minute on a sideline throw to Tyquan Thornton – who got easy separation against Shaun Wade – but the ball drifted out of bounds. One of the last reps was another TD to Nixon in the back of the end zone.

-The team huddled up and sang Happy Birthday to Matt Judon before breaking into individual periods.
