Patriots should have plenty of flexibility as they navigate the upcoming off-season

SANTA CLARA- It is never too early to start thinking about next season which starts on Monday after the Super Bowl. Despite a historic 2025 offseason where the New England Patriots redefined aggressive spending, the franchise is set to enter the 2026 league year in an enviable financial position.

Last year, the front office shattered records by leading the NFL with over $209 million in guaranteed money and roughly $364 million in total contract value. However, this heavy investment has not compromised their future flexibility. According to Patriots salary cap expert Miguel Benzan, the team is projected to be $42.6 million under the cap for the upcoming season.

Benzan’s calculations, which utilize a median cap figure of $303.45 million, suggest that New England will once again rank among the top ten teams in available spending power.

While the club may not possess the same overwhelming monetary surplus they enjoyed last year, they remain well-equipped to maintain their roster’s core while pursuing external upgrades. Retaining key contributors should be a straightforward task given the projected space.

According to data from OverTheCap, the Patriots have seven players scheduled to enter unrestricted free agency. This list includes veteran tight end Austin Hooper and defensive lineman Khyiris Tonga, along with linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson, safety Jaylinn Hawkins, and reserve left tackle Vederian Lowe.

With a healthy cap sheet and manageable free-agent departures, New England is primed to continue its roster-building efforts without the burden of financial strain.

Patriots Coach Mike Vrabel says the team will continue to focus on building the roster through the draft.

“I think we all understand how important the draft is to be able to, at every level, add to the roster. Starters, role players, depth, special teams players, developmental players at some capacity, but then just to try to improve them and develop them. And then there’s answers in free agency too. I think this is a fine line, but we obviously want to be able to continue to build through the draft, make smart decisions, bring the right people in, draft the right people at the right time, have a vision for them and be able to help them reach their full potential.”

The Patriots are well positioned to make another championship run next season but whether or not that comes to fruition will depend on what they do this off-season.
