Patriots Pulse: The Patriots Lose a Valuable Member of Two Super Bowl Teams in Logan Ryan

By John Sarianides

Free agent cornerback Logan Ryan has decided to sign a 3 year, $30 million dollar contract with the Tennessee Titans.

The cornerback out of Rutgers was a valuable member of two Super Bowl teams in New England and one of the more unheralded members of the team in recent years.

Ryan was a great scheme fit for the Patriots as a squat cover two corner. He was fundementally sound and played with good technique. He was the quintessential Patriot in that regard.

There is no doubt the Patriots will miss Ryan. He was smart, knew all the calls and adjustments and played within the confines of the scheme. His loss will be felt. However, he also wasn’t worth $10 million dollars a season. That is elite corner money in the NFL and Bill Belichick wasn’t willing to pay him that.

Ryan positioned himself well by signing this contract with the Titans. It is only a three year deal so he will more than likely play the whole term. He will be 29 when the deal expires which means he will be in position to earn a third contract. Usually only very good to great players get a third contract in the NFL these days.

Ryan had a very productive but nondescript career in New England. I get the sense he will be a similar type player for the Titans. Highly productive but under the radar.
