Game Rewind: The Patriots dominated the Broncos in all three phases of the game en route to a 41-16 win. The Patriots scored on their opening drive and never looked back in a rare dominate performance in Denver.
Here are five thoughts from the game.
1. Brady Was Brilliant: Tom Brady was once again brilliant going 25 of 34 for 266 yards and 3 touchdown passes. The ageless wonder was on point all night long and he validated the Patriots decision to trade Jimmy Garoppolo by playing one of his best games of the season in a place where he has traditionally struggled.
2. Dion the Dude: Dion Lewis has emerged as the Patriots top running back and has solidified his hold on the starting job by returning a kick-off for a touchdown and scoring a rushing touchdown. With Mike Gillislee in the doghouse, the Patriots are going to rely on Lewis even more, making him an integral part of the Patriots offense.
3. Marty’s Back: After forcing his way out of Green Bay and being claimed by the Patriots last week, Martellus Bennett made his 2017 debut by catching 3 passes for 38 yards. Bennett is exactly what the Patriots need given their injuries at wide receiver and their desire to play in 12 and 13 personnel. With only three healthy receivers on the roster right now, Bennett’s role will expand moving forward.
4. D Stands for Defensive Dominance: The Patriots defense has done a complete 180 from the first four weeks. They are still a bend but don’t break defense but they are playing much better particularly on the back end. The return of Stephon Gilmore helped this week as he did a decent job on Demaryius Thomas. After giving up 32 points per game the first four weeks, the Patriots have surrendered 13.4 points per game over their last five games. That is an impressive turnaround.
5. Exercising Demons: With their blowout win over the Broncos, the Patriots were able to exercise some demons. Mile High Stadium/Sports Authority Field has been a house of horrors for the Patriots through the years. It was nice to see them blast Denver there for once.
