Game Rewind: The Patriots jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back in a 27-16 win against a banged up Steelers team.
Here are my five thoughts on the game.
1. Blount Force Trauma: The Patriots game plan this week was obvious from the out set. They wanted to be balanced and run the football.
LeGarrette Blount was a manimal in this game carrying the ball 24 times for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns. He punished the Steelers throughout the game, especially in the second half. It was Blount force trauma! (I love that expression, sorry)
2. Offensive Line Played Well: The offensive line played well, particularly left guard Joe Thuney. Tom Brady was only sacked one time and that wasn’t until the fourth quarter.
We talked about the importance of being physical up front and picking Pittsburgh’s zone pressures. The offensive line did a good job in both areas.
3. Brady Was Good Enough: This certainly wasn’t the best performance of Tom Brady’s career but he played well and once again, he didn’t turn the ball over. Brady finished 19/26 for 222 yards and two 2 touchdown passes.
Brady has 8 touchdown passes since his return. He has yet to throw an interception since his return.
4. Defense Was Up and Down: Once again, the defense played well at times and they struggled at other times.
Getting off the field on third down continues to be an issue, especially third and short situations.
The return of Jaime Collins helped but the Patriots are playing like their ranking right now (13th overall defense in the league), not the top ten defense we thought they were going to be.
5. Gosto Sucko: Stephen Gostkowski’s struggles continue as he missed his second extra point of the season. All of a sudden, Gostkowski is doing his best impression of Missin Sisson (older Patriots fans know what I’m talking about)
Gostkowski needs to turn things around because his inconsistency is scaring the hell out of Patriots fans right now.
