The Patriots will have an interesting decision to make this off-season regarding the future of back up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
With one year left on his rookie deal, Garoppolo is scheduled to become a free agent next off-season. Conventional wisdom would suggest that with 39 year old Tom Brady still playing at a high level, the Patriots would be looking to trade Garoppolo. That may or may not be the case but either way you look at it, the Patriots are going to be willing to listen to any offers that come their way.
Here are three offers that could pry Garoppolo away from the Patriots.
2017 1st Round Pick, 4th Round Pick: The Sam Bradford package. Many people around the league believe that if the Patriots were going to trade Garoppolo, this would be the initial asking price.
The problem is that other than the Cleveland Browns, no other team has a second a second first round pick in this year’s draft. The teams that need quarterbacks, are all picking in the top ten and they are unlikely to part with a top ten pick for Garoppolo. So while this may be the ideal asking price, it is unrealistic to expect that the Patriots will get a package like this in return for Garoppolo.
2018 First Round Pick, 2017 3rd Round Pick: I think this is a more realistic package for Garoppolo. It would allow other teams to get involved in a bidding war for his services.
If the Patriots are willing to accept a future first round pick and a day two pick in this draft, they could get a deal done with a team like the 49ers or the Bears.
Bill Belichick won’t get the kind of package that he wants unless he gets more teams involved in the Garoppolo sweepstakes.
2017 2nd Round Pick, 4th Round Pick, 6th Round Pick: I think this is the least likely Package the Patriots would accept but it is a possibility. Again, it would all depend on how much interest there is in Garoppolo and if Belichick is truly interested in trading him.
If a team like the 49ers, which has the second pick in the second round puts a package like this together, the Patriots would listen but I think it would take a future pick as well to get it done.
The Patriots have all of the leverage right now because they have a player that other teams want. Belichick doesn’t have to do anything. He can stand pat and hold onto Garoppolo. I have a feeling however that if the right deal comes along, he will trade him. It will be an interesting story to watch develop in the coming weeks.
