Patriots Pulse Blog: Breaking Down First Round Picks Isaiah Wynn and Sony Michel

The Patriots surprisingly stood pat on Thursday night and used both of their first round picks. With the 23rd pick, they took Georgia offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn. With the 31st pick, they took another Georgia Bulldog, running back Sony Michel.

Here are my thoughts on both players

Pick #23: Isaiah Wynn, OT Georgia, 6-2 313

What I Like: Wynn offers versatility. He played left tackle at Georgia but he can kick inside and play guard as well. The Patriots will give him every opportunity to play left tackle. Wynn has the feet and the athleticism to compete against your prototypical speed rushers who like to get up the field.

Wynn moves well in space and can get out and seal off of a double team or lead the convoy on a screen. Wynn isn’t just athletic. He plays with a nasty streak and has an edge to him. He is one of the most fundamentally sound players in this draft.

What I Don’t Like: Wynn is a guard to me. I don’t think he has the length to play left tackle in the NFL. He will be able to handle speed rusher because he has good feet. I think he will struggle against bigger defensive ends who can get inside hand position on him and bull rush him. Wynn is explosive off the snap and gets movement as a run blocker but he doesn’t re-create the line of scrimmage. He has a tendency to stall at times as a run blocker.

Final Thoughts: I like the pick. After Tennessee took Rashaan Evans at 22, the Patriots shifted gears and took Wynn. He offers the versatility offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia looks for and he is fundamentally sound. Wynn is a good football player. He will start from day one.

Pick #31: Sony Michel, RB, Georgia, 5-11 214

What I Like: Michel is a three down back. He runs with power between the tackles and has the ability to stick his foot in the ground and make a defender miss in space. Michel has a second gear in the open field. He can finish his runs once he gets ahead of the pack.

Michel shows good patience on outside zone plays. He sets up his blocks and does a good job of sticking his foot in the ground and cutting up the alley. Michel has an effective jump cut that he uses to bounce his runs outside. He has good feet and runs through on contact. He is a balanced runner who does a good job getting small in the hole.

As a receiver, Michel is a good route runner and has good hands. He runs a full running back route tree and is effective on halfback screens. He shows good patience and he fits into his blocks.

What I Don’t Like: Michel has had knee issues in the past so there are some durability concerns. Some teams dropped him on their boards because the belief around the league is his knee issues could shorten his career despite the fact that he wasn’t the full time starter at Georgia. Michel also had ball security issues which is as we know is the quickest way to end up in Bill Belichick’s doghouse.

Final Thoughts: I like the player, I don’t like the pick. The Patriots didn’t need a running back. They already have Rex Burkhead, James White, Mike Gillislee and Jeremy Hill on the roster. Gillislee and Hill will come off the books after this season but Burkhead and White will still have two years on their deals. I know Bill Belichick is taking a long term view here but the Patriots should have gone defense with the 31st pick. Especially with players like Josh Jackson and Harold Landry still on the board.
