Patriots Pulse Blog: The Patriots Signing Darrelle Revis Would Be a Mistake

By John Sarianides

Local media have been tossing around the idea in recent days of the Patriots signing free agent cornerback Darrelle Revis if they trade Malcolm Butler. Signing Revis would be a mistake in my opinion.

The notion that a Revis, Patriots union is possible is ludacris. If the Patriots move on from Malcolm Butler, the last guy they should bring into their building is Darrelle Revis.

Revis is not the same player he was three years ago when he signed with the Patriots. His skills have greatly declined since then. He can no longer carry routes vertically on a consistent basis and he struggles with bigger receivers.

The idea that he’s lost ten pounds and that being coached by Bill Belichick will fix what ever issues he had last season is insane. Scheme and coaching can only do so much for a player in decline. Father Time has caught up with Revis and there is nothing Belichick or any other coach can do about it.

Revis still wants to get paid like an elite player. He publicly stated as much a few weeks back when he said that he will not play for less than $6 million dollars next season. Good luck getting that kind of a contract Darrelle.

The days of Revis fleecing teams in contract negotiations are over. Revis Island is now a major tourist attraction. Everyone wants to visit. Well, almost everyone. Bill Belichick has already been there once and he doesn’t want to go back.

The Patriots will not sign Darrelle Revis. If they do, they would be making a big mistake. Belichick doesn’t like making mistakes. Let Revis bamboozle someone else. The Patriots are already the favorites to win Super Bowl 52. They don’t need Revis.
