ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported this morning that the Patriots will not be trading back up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo this off-season. The Patriots were rumored to have been listening to offers for the fourth year quarterback but apparently they didn’t get an offer that was good enough to entice them to trade him.
If the report is true, I don’t see how it makes sense to hold onto Garoppolo. Bill Belichick always talks about doing what is best for the team. How is holding onto Garoppolo best for the team or for him for that matter? He is a valuable asset. Belichick should be doing what ever he can to trade him and take advantage of whatever value he has.
I understand the Patriots value Garoppolo as a back up and aren’t ready to trade him but he isn’t going to play in the next three years unless Brady gets hurt or regresses. It doesn’t make any sense to keep him. Unless he is willing to wait another three years to play, Garoppolo will probably sign elsewhere next off-season.
I am not convinced that if the right deal came along, that Belichick wouldn’t listen. He has to listen or he is just paying us lip service when he says he puts the team first. He owes it to the organization to see what he can get for him.
I still think there is a chance that Garoppolo gets traded. I know Schefter is usually on point when it comes to breaking news but I can’t see the Patriots passing up an opportunity to get a return on a player with value, especially this off-season. Several teams need a starting quarterback and the quarterback class in this year’s draft is not very good. If there was ever a time to trade Garoppolo, now is that time.
