Patriots Pulse Blog: The Patriots Capitalize on Jacoby Brissett By Trading Him

By John Sarianides

The Patriots drafted quarterback Jacoby Brissett in the third round of the 2016 draft. Today, they traded Brissett to the Indianapolis Colts for wide receiver Phillip Dorsett. Dorsett was the Colts 2015 first round pick.

Apparently Brissett was never in the Patriots future plans. He was drafted as Jimmy Garoppolo’s back up last season while Tom Brady was suspended for the first four games. That is what Bill Belichick saw him as.

The Patriots did not want to invest time in developing Brissett because they did not see him as a starting quarterback in the NFL. The opportunity to capitalize on having quarterback depth presented itself and Belichick took advantage of it.

The Colts are obviously excited about adding Brissett. Here is their goofy press release.

Yeah. That is absurd but then again, it’s the Colts. This is the same organization that put up an AFC finalist banner so what do you expect.

As for Dorsett. He was going to be the Colts fourth receiver and at best, that is what he is going to be with the Patriots.

Dorsett is a speedster who can separate down the field but he has inconsistent hands. He could help the Patriots on special teams. Either way, the Patriots will find a way to use the former first rounder. Belichick and his coaches will carve out a role for him.
