Patriots Pulse Blog: Nick Fairley Would Be a Great Fit in the Patriots 4-3 Defense.

NFL: Detroit Lions at Oakland Raiders

The Patriots met with free agent defensive tackle Nick Fairley yesterday at the NFL Annual League Meetings in Boca Raton, Florida. Fairley spent last season with the St. Louis Rams. He hasn’t quite lived up to the lofty expectations of him when he was drafted 13th overall by the Detroit Lions in 2011. Weight problems and off the field issues have derailed his career thus far but he has enough upside and ability that he could thrive in the right situation.

At 6-4 290, Fairley has the size and athletcism to play either tackle spot in the Patriots 4-3 defense. If he were to sign with the Patriots, Fairley would more than likely play the three technique defensive tackle spot. If Fairley can find a way to get into shape and stay in shape, the 28 year old still has the explosive first step that made him one of the top prospects in the 2011 draft.

As it stands, the Patriots are kicking the tires on Fairley but he is another player that would be a good scheme fit, so don’t be surprised if he’s signs. If Fairley does here, it would probably be on a one year deal. If I were in his shoes, I would take it. Fairley is still young enough that with a quality season here, he could secure a long term contract elsewhere.
