Game Rewind: The Patriots were thoroughly handled in all three phases of the game in a 26-10 loss to the Lions on Sunday. The game was never in doubt as the Lions outplayed the Patriots from start to finish.
Here are five thoughts on the game.
1. The Patriots Got Handled Up Front: The Patriots we’re dominated on both sides of the ball as the Lions rushed for 159 yards. Rookie running back Kerryon Johnson had 101 of those yards. Johnson is the first Lions running back to rush for one hundred yards in four years. Conversely, the Patriots only rushed for 89 yards as a team and were handled by Detroit’s front seven. It was a tough night for the offensive and defensive lines.
2. Gronk Was Erased: The Lions did a great job of taking Rob Gronkowski out of the Patriots game plan. The Patriots got a taste of their own medicine when it comes to them focusing on and taking out the other team’s number one option in the passing game.
3. Pass Pro Problems: The offensive line not only struggled in the run game but they couldn’t protect Tom Brady either. Brady was only sacked two times but he was hit routinely.
4. Big Plays: The Lions made big plays in key situations, especially in the passing game. The Patriots continue to have problems getting off the field on third down but giving up big plays is also an issue. It was obvious they missed Trey Flowers and Patrick Chung.
5. Been Here Before: We’ve been here before in recent years. The Patriots will be fine but they face a must win on Sunday against the Dolphins.
