Patriots fans got all lathered up last week when the Tennessee Titans released veteran cornerback Jason McCourty. McCourty of course is the twin brother of Patriots free safety Devin McCourty.
Patriots Nation is clamoring for Bill Belichick to sign the other McCourty but there are a couple of hurdles that have to be cleared before the Patriots do that. One is Malcolm Butler. The Patriots are in a holding pattern until he signs his tender and his situation is resolved.
The other issue is money. McCourty will have other suitors that can offer more money and years than the Patriots can. Jason MCourty must be willing to take less money on a one year deal in order to compete for a Super Bowl and play with his brother.
Could I see him in a Patriots uniform next season? Sure. But it is not the forgone conclusion that Patriots fans think it is. A lot has to happen before the other McCourty ends up in New England.
It is abundantly obvious that Bill Belichick is loading up for next season. It would only make sense to add another piece like McCourty to an already stacked roster. If Belichick can make it happen, great. If he can’t, the Patriots can still address their potential cornerback needs in free agency or the draft.
I know Patriots fans don’t want to hear that but let’s not forget boys and girls. The NFL is a business.
