The Patriots drafted Arkansas defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. with pick the 131st in the fourth round. Here is my scouting report on Wise.
Deatrich Wise Jr. DE, 6-5 274, Arkansas
Vs. Run: Wise is a one gap, nine technique defensive end. Has long arms and shows an ability to stack a tackle and shed him. Strong at the point of attack and can anchor down against reach blocks.
Pass Rush: Wise has a quick first step and he covers a lot of ground. He’s long and plays with good lean and bend. Wise has strong hands but he doesn’t do a good job of replacing a tackle’s hands when mixing it up.
Pursuit: Wise can step his foot in the ground and play down the line of scrimmage. Bends enough that he can plant and drive to the ball.
Tackling: Wise is a good tackler but he needs to break down more. Tackles high and loses ball carriers because of his arm length.
Initial Quicks: Wise had a quick first step and can re-establish position on the offensive side of the line of scrimmage.
Recognition: Wise recognizes single blocks and double teams but he needs to do a better job of identifying kick or wham blocks. Walks into blocks at times.
Neutralize Blocks: Wise has a strong upper body and he can extend and separate on single blocks. Needs to do a better job against double teams. He doesn’t split them consistently enough and gets washed.
Key & Diagnose: Wise plays with good instincts. Can I.D counter and screen plays and plant and adjust in space. Wise doesn’t play with natural bend. As a result, he doesn’t always see plays develop.
Final Report: Wise is long and has good quickness off the snap. He is not as freakishly athletic as Chandler Jones was, but he is very similar physically. Wise is more like Trey Flowers than Jones.
