The Patriots officially rehired Dante Scarnecchia as their offensive line coach. This will be Scarnecchia’s third tour of duty with the Patriots. Scarnecchia has been retired for the past two years but he was still around the organization helping them evaluate talent for the draft.
So, how does Coach Scar improve the Patriots offensive line? Well, he knows the veterans and he’s gotten those guys to play for him before at a high level. There’s no reason to believe he can’t do it again. Scarnecchia already has a relationship with the offensive coaching staff, which also helps. He knows the system and he helped develop the blocking schemes. It’ll be an easy transition for him and the staff.
The biggest challenge Scarnecchia faces is helping the young offensive lineman develop. He knows Bryan Stork, Tre Jackson, Shaq Mason, Cameron Fleming and David Andrews because he’s evaluated them but he’s never coached them. They will be new to him and he will be new to them. It’ll take time but if those guys buy in and they will, Scarnecchia will get the most out of them.
It remains to be seen how long Scarnecchia coaches for. He retired for a reason. I’m sure he’s rejuvenated after two years away from the game and ready to come back. He’s a coach. It’s what he does. He obviously has a passion for the game and the position he coaches.
Bringing back Scarnecchia makes sense. He will his work cut out for him but if there is anyone who fix the Patriots offensive line, it’s Coach Scar.
