Patriots Pulse Blog: 5 Patriots to Keep An Eye On This Season

The Patriots officially report to training camp tomorrow with the first practice taking place on Thursday.

We all know how important Brady, Gronkowski, Devin McCourty and Dont’a Hightower are to this team but who are five other players that could make a big impact this season?

Here are five players to keep an eye on.

*Denotes rookie

1. *Sony Michel, RB: Expectations are high for Michel as they should be. He has the size and the skill set to be a three down back for the Patriots. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and running backs coach Ivan Fears will ease Michel into the system slowly but by mid season, Michel could the Patriots starting running back. He’s the best back on the roster right now and it is not even close.

2. Cordarrelle Patterson, WR: Patterson’s role in Minnesota and Oakland diminished the last three years. After a sensational rookie season, Patterson relegated to being just a kick returner.

The Patriots will do a lot more with him. He will still return kicks but Patterson will be used on offense as well. Look for him to line up in the backfield and in the slot as the Patriots try to get him the ball in space.

3. Derek Rivers, DE: Rivers missed his entire rookie season due to a torn ACL. He’s 100% now and ready to contribute. Rivers will be used primarily as a situational pass rusher. The Patriots will carry more defensive lineman and outside linebackers now because de facto defensive coordinator Brian Flores believe in playing more of them and rotating them in. Rivers will play a lot in sub packages and have a chance to impress.

4. *Braxton Berrios, WR: Berrios comes in with a lot of hype as the next great Patriots slot receiver. He will get the opportunity to play right away in 11 and 10 personnel packages, especially with Julien Edelman being suspended. I would pump the brakes though when it comes to how much he will produce offensively. Berrios will make a bigger impact as a punt returner early on than a receiver.

5. *JaWhaun Bentley, ILB: The rookie inside linebacker is big, physical, instinctual and smart. All characteristics that led to him being drafted by the Patriots. With a good camp, Bentley could potential find himself playing meaningful snap in base and nickel packages on first and second down. Bentley is a two down thumper who can fill against the run and match up against underneath receivers. Bentley is a Belichick type leader and player. I can see him making the team and playing a major role defensively.

Other to Watch: *Christian Sam, OLB, *Duke Dawson, CB, Jacob Hollister, TE, Vincent Valentine, DT, Cyrus Jones (Yes. Him!) CB/KR.
