The Patriots made a series of moves ahead of Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
The most prominent move was elevating quarterback/wide receiver Malik Cunningham from the practice squad and signing him to a three year deal. Cunningham got reps this week and is expected to be a part of this week’s game plan.
Bill Belichick talked about Cunningham’s growth and improvement in his Friday morning press conference.
“Malik’s really worked hard and made a lot of improvement. He never really played in the kicking game at Louisville, so he’s started to show up there, never played receiver – didn’t look very good either, in the spring, but he’s really improved there. He can catch the ball, but just route running and finding zones and things like that. But, it’s come pretty naturally to him. He plays a good amount of quarterback. He’s competent there. He’s a smart kid, works hard, and the opportunities he’s had, he’s shown a lot of improvement. It’s a little too early for an induction ceremony here, but definitely a lot of improvement.”
Do not be surprised if Cunningham plays a specific number of snaps today at quarterback as part of direct snap package. He may also play some snaps at wide receiver and on special teams.
The Patriots also elevated wide receiver Jalen Reagor from the practice squad. The former first round pick of the Eagles has been a disappointment thus far in his career but he does offer big play potential and returns kicks.
Tyquan Thornton was activated off injured reserve and he will be making his season debut today well. With Thornton back and Reagor in the mix, the Patriots are hoping they can make more big plays in the passing game.
Defensive tackle Jeremiah Pharms was also elevated for Sunday’s game to provide the Patriots with some additional depth along the defensive line.
In two corresponding moves, the Patriots placed linebacker Matthew Judon and offensive tackle Tyrone Wheatley Jr. on injured reserve.
