Patriots: Kristian Wilkerson takes advantage of his opportunity

Kristian Wilkerson has worked hard to get his opportunity. It hasn’t always been easy but after a strong training camp in which he caught the coaching staff’s attention, Wilkerson was signed to the practice squad at the end of the summer.

All season long he has been working and patiently waiting to get his opportunity. Well that moment arrived this past weekend when he was told he was getting called up for the Jaguars game.

“I think I found out Friday or Saturday. I was just ready to go. Just prepared all year for this so it finally came and hopefully I did what I did but we got the win, so that’s the best thing.”

The 24 year old receiver played his college ball at Southeast Missouri State. After signing with the Titans in 2020, he was released and signed with the Patriots last off-season.

At 6-1 200, Wilkerson has good size and speed. He gives the Patriots a versatile target that can work the middle of the field but also stretch the field vertically.

The Patriots sat former first round pick N’Keal Harry in order to give Wilkerson his shot and Wilkerson made the most of his opportunity catching 4 passes for 42 yards and two touchdowns. Wilkerson talked about what it felt like catching his first two touchdowns in the NFL.

“I’m just doing whatever I can to help the team win. It doesn’t matter if it’s a catch or blocking, just trying to help the team win.”

Wilkerson has clearly figured out the Patriot Way when it comes to dealing with the media but he has also figured it out as a pro.

“I feel like there’s just a standard here to come in and work hard every day so it’s not like I think about it. But just working hard is the standard here pretty much if you want to make it or play. You’ve got to work hard, be on top of your game and know what you’re doing out there for the coaches.”

Wilkerson knows that Sunday’s performance guarantees him nothing. It did however endeared him more to his coaches and teammates who trust him more now.

Fellow receiver Jakobi Meyers certainly appreciates Wilkerson’s efforts.

“It was amazing honestly. Just understanding where he came from, undrafted, guys probably doubting you, you’re just waiting on your moment, working hard every day. He’s in here at 6:00 every morning. Seeing him go out there and make plays that we all knew he could make – now everybody gets to see it. I’m real happy for him.”

It is easy to be happy for Wilkerson. He deserves the high praise. Now it is up to him to see if he can make the most of his opportunity long term.
