Patriots hire Jerry Montgomery as defensive line coach

The Patriots have hired Jerry Montgomery as defensive line coach. Montgomery spent the past nine seasons as the Green Bay Packers defensive line coach and run game coordinator since 2022.

Montgomery replaces DeMarcus Covington who was promoted to defensive coordinator last week.

Montgomery worked for both Mike McCarthy and Matt LaFleur during his tenure in Green Bay. Prior to joining the Packers, Montgomery coached at his alma mater Iowa, Iowa City West High School, North Iowa Community College, Northern Iowa, Wyoming and Indiana. He coached at Michigan from 2011 to 2012 and Oklahoma from 2013 to 2014.

Montgomery was a three-year starter at Iowa. After finishing his collegiate playing career, he signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2002. He also played in the Arena Football League with the Chicago Rush, Colorado Crush and Las Vegas Gladiators.

Montgomery also coached with new Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt for a short period of time and briefly worked with Patriots executive Eliot Wolf.

Montgomery’s hiring could signal the Patriots will be more of 30 front or at least that will be their base defense and they will build off of that.
