The Patriots had a busy day on Sunday. The highlight of the day of course was free safety Devin McCourty agreeing to terms on a one year, $9 million dollar deal.
The 34 year old McCourty is returning for his 13th season with the Patriots. Originally drafted as a first round pick in the 2010 draft, McCourty finished last season with 60 tackles and 3 interceptions.
The Patriots also used a second round tender on wide receiver Jakobi Meyers. By doing so, it all but ensures that Meyers will be back in Foxboro in 2022. A team would have to surrender a second round pick if they signed Meyers to an offer sheet and the Patriots opted not to match.
A second-round tender would pay Meyers $3.98 million in 2022, a substantial raise from the $850,000 he made last season.
The 25 year old Meyers is coming off of a career year in which he caught 83 passes for 866 yards and two touchdowns.
The Patriots opted not to tender fullback Jakob Johnson which made him an unrestricted free agent. By not tendering Johnson, it all but guarantees the Patriots are moving on from him. The German born Johnson was a great story but he struggled at times last season. Despite that, he should have a decent market with so many teams now utilizing 21 personnel more.
With free agency scheduled to commence on Wednesday at 4pm, expect the Patriots to be busy. Of course the rumors and possible signings will commence today so stay tuned.
